Choosing What Matters

This week, I found myself searching for one clear idea to write about.

My mind was full—of conversations, adventures, reflections, and questions about how we become who we are.

Then, while spending time with a group of girlfriends, a common thread quietly emerged.  We are mid-summer and many people are experiencing lovely summer getaways and vacations.

So many of us agreed that one of the greatest gifts of vacation isn't simply the destination.

It's the absence of the weight we carry at home.

The endless tidying.

The laundry.

The meal planning.

The constant mental checklist.

Of course those responsibilities don't disappear forever—but when we're away, they loosen their grip just enough for us to remember what it feels like to simply be present.

That left me wondering:

How do we re-create that in our daily lives?

Why do the tasks so often pull us away from the people we love most?

I've always appreciated productivity. Years ago, I loved David Allen's Getting Things Done. There is genuine satisfaction in accomplishing meaningful work.

But lately I've been asking a different question.

Not How can I do more?

Instead...

To what end?

Are the things filling my calendar aligned with what I value most?

One friend shared something that made me smile.

She jokes that she has a different name when she's on vacation—her lighter, happier alter ego shows up.

It's funny because it's true.

What if that version of ourselves didn't have to wait for vacation?

What if we practiced becoming that person a little more often?

Lately I've been trying a few simple reminders.

Not because they make life perfect.

Because they help me return to what matters.

A few practices I'm holding onto this summer:

Begin the day with intention
These days, my favorite morning ritual isn't checking things off a list. It's quietly sharing coffee with my husband before our daughter wakes, asking ourselves what we hope to bring to the day.

Daily inquiry
Ask one meaningful question.  People remember how you make them feel - so, I ask, "What is one thing I can do today that helps someone I love feel important?"

Protect a quiet moment

A walk. Five minutes in the car. Sitting outside. Space for a quieter mind often creates room for clearer answers.

Remember that you have a choice
This one makes me smile.....The dishes always seem to call my name after dinner.

Sometimes they can wait.

Sometimes the better choice is sitting outside with our daughter, watching the last light fade from the sky.

Those dishes will still be there.  That summer evening won't.

The goal is not to escape our everyday lives.

It's learning to bring a little more intention into them.

My hope for you this week is simple.

When you feel yourself being pulled in a dozen different directions, pause for just a moment and ask:

Is this calling for my attention...or is something else calling for my heart?

I hope you choose what matters most.

Wishing you spaciousness, a little release from the pull, and a summer full of intentionally chosen moments.

With Gratitude,

Michelle

🧭Compass Shift

This week's reflection:

What is one thing pulling at your attention this week... that doesn't deserve your best energy?

And what person, conversation, or quiet moment might deserve it instead?

Sometimes the most meaningful choice we make isn't what we accomplish.

It's what we intentionally leave undone.

✨ Closing

Thank you for being here.

We're grateful to be sharing this journey with you and can't wait to continue exploring Thailand together.
